เป็นสารประกอบเชิงซ้อนของฮาโลเจน (ได้แก่ ไอโอดีน, โบรมีน, และฟลูออรีน) สารประกอบดังกล่าวจะแสดงปฏิกิริยาทั้งในการต่อต้านอนุมูลอิสระต่างๆ (anti-oxidants) และยังเป็นตัวออกซิเดชัน oxidative agents) ในคราวเดียวกันโดยเฉพาะในบริเวณเนื้อเยื่ออ่อนและชั้นเยื่อเมือก (mucus layer) ของปะการังจะพบได้มากเป็นพิเศษสารประกอบดังกล่าวจะช่วยลดการถูกฟอกขาวของปะการังโดยอาศัยปฏิกิริยาการกำจัดสารต่างๆโดยอาศัยความสามารถในการเป็นตัวออกซิไดซ์และการทำปฏิกิริยากับสารอินทรีย์ต่างๆที่เป็นอันตรายต่อปะการังโดยเฉพาะสารประกอบเชิงซ้อนของไอโอดีนและโบรมีนนั้นจะเกี่ยวข้องกับกระบวนการ pink chromo-protein (pocciloporin)

Reef colors A supplement contains iodine and other halogens that are associated with many biological processes, one of them being the production of the pink pigments in the soft tissue of corals. To ensure coral health, the ppm level of these elements must be maintained within a narrow band and therefore should only be dosed according to a measured requirement of the aquarium.
