Quickstick For quick, convenient and reliable water analysis The quality of the pond water is very important for the biological balance and the health of the fish. Therefore, it is necessary to check the water quality regularly. The OASE aqua activ Quickstick enables the consumer to determine quickly, easily and reliably the 5 most important water parameters (ph-value, total hardness, carbonate hardness, nitrite and nitrate). Even inexperienced pond owners will get a reliable water analysis with OASE aqua activ Quickstick. The Quickstick must be immersed in the pond water for just one second and then shaken a little to remove any surplus water. After approximately one minute the coloured squares on the quickstick can be compared to the squares on the test card provided to determine the result.

Why test? Invertebrates (stony corals and soft corals, sponges, sea urchins, crustaceans, mussels, snails etc.) and the popular red coralline algae found in marine water require sufficient levels of calcium for healthy growth. The natural calcium level of the sea is 390–440 mg/l. In order for the organism to make the best use of the calcium, the correct ratio of hydrogen carbonate must also be present in the water. For this reason adding calcium compounds without hydrogen carbonate (such as calcium chloride), is pointless. A calcium level of 400–480 mg/l is proved to be ideal for marine aquariums.

The JBL ProAqua phosphate test set PO4 is a means of exactly determining and routinely controlling the phosphate content in fresh water and marine tanks within a range of 0.05 - XXXXXX mg/l (ppm). JBL has developed a compensational method for slightly discoloured water. When e.g. peat is added to the filter or medical treatments stain the water, you will still get precise and reliable readings.

Recommended level for oodinium treatment: 0,3 mg/l Cu Accurate test for determining the copper content in freshwater and saltwater tanks. Range of values:< 0,1; 0,1; 0,2; 0,3: 0,45; 0,6; 0,8; 1,2; 1,6 mg/l. Can also be used to check tap water, which should not contain any copper. Helpful in administering medications and preparations containing copper, as the copper content should never exceed 0,3 mg/l, whilst insufficient doses will not result in a cure.

The pH value can have a major impact on the growth of corals and calcareous algae and on many biological processes. The pH should not be allowed to fluctuate more than approx. 0.3 units during 24 hours and should preferably be kept between 8.0 and 8.2.

When an aquarium has insufficient regions deprived of oxygen (= anaerobic zones) or denitrification proceeds incompletely then nitrate will build-up. A too high nitrate concentration can result in unwanted algae-growth and these might irritate corals in their neighborhood. Nitrate as such also retards coral growth. The nitrate concentration in a proper functioning reef aquarium should preferably be lower than 1 mg/L. Fish-only aquariums would usually show much higher nitrate concentrations.

Salifert’s Nitrite test kit does not suffer from such an amine interference because very special ingredients are used. These same ingredients also result in a full color development within minutes. The developed color is very intense making detection of even minute traces of nitrite easy. It probably is the most sensitive, accurate and fastest nitrite test kit available.

The Salifert Ammonia test is very straightforward and measures the sum of toxic ammonia and ammonium in just a few minutes. The kit can perform approx. 50 measurements and can detect 0.5 ppm of total ammonia easily.

Washing fish food, which is a rich source for phosphates in a sieve after thawing reduces the input of phosphate tremendously. Also avoiding use of phosphate-rich low-grade activated carbon helps keep phosphate levels as low as possible. Checking the activated carbon for phosphate prior to use is therefore highly recommended.

The Salifert test kit offers a very sensitive and accurate test for measuring dissolved or weakly chelated copper with a pH of 7.5–9. Lasts for several copper cures or provides sufficient for up to 50 tests on tap or aquarium water as a routine check. Ca be used for marine, fresh and garden pond water

Magnesium is an element which was neglected for a long time. The magnesium content of some aquariums appears to be rather low when tested. Corrective measures have to taken for a balanced reef system.

In a healthy aquarium growth and multiplication of corals, desired calcareous algae and other organisms results in calcium depletion. Because of the importance of calcium timely corrective measures would have to be taken. For that purpose a proper calcium additive together with an accurate test kit are required.

Calcium alone cannot form the skeletal material of corals and allow calcareous algae to grow. Some other substances are needed as well. A few other constituents are carbonate and bicarbonate. These two substances also have a major impact on the stabilization of the pH in the proper range of 8.1 – 8.4. Such stabilization is also called buffering.

Do not underestimate the number of flatworms in your system. In a few cases a significant number of flatworms can be hiding in for example crevices. Blow in such and any other potential hiding places water to blow any flatworm out of there. For that purpose you can use a powerhead or a turkey baster. Siphon out those flatworms as well.

Simply place pH Alert® visibly anywhere in the aquarium or filter and match the sensor color to the corresponding pH reading on the color wheel. It’s that easy. No chemicals or test procedures are required. When first put in service, response time will be about 30 minutes. Thereafter, pH shifts will register within ten minutes.

As little as 0.02 mg/L of free ammonia will produce a greenish hue on the detector surface. This corresponds to a total ammonia (both ionized and free ammonia) of 0.25 mg/L in marine water at pH 8.3. In freshwater at pH 7.0, this corresponds to 3.6 mg/L total ammonia. Free ammonia is much more toxic than ionized ammonia. As free ammonia, the ALERT color corresponds to about 0.05 mg/L, ALARM to about 0.2 mg/L, and TOXIC to about 0.5 mg/L. The ALERT concentration is tolerated for several days, ALARM for a few days, and TOXIC is rapidly harmful. This product is not recommended for use at acid pH
